April 4, 2019
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Ken Buck stood up for women and other survivors of domestic abuse by voting against H.R. 1858 – the VAWA reauthorization bill. The legislation was referred to seven House committees, including the House Judiciary Committee on which Congressman Buck serves.

During the mark-up of the bill, Congressman Buck offered an amendment to allow the DOJ to use Violence Against Women Act grant money to fund firearms’ training programs for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and other crimes. Congressman Buck put forward a similar amendment for debate on the House floor. Both times Democrats blocked the amendment. Following the vote, Congressman Buck issued the following statement:

“Democrats referenced many studies on domestic violence in this bill, but they conveniently overlooked the science that shows firearm access and training can be an invaluable tool to empower and protect victims of domestic violence.”
