Washington â€" Today, the House of Representatives voted 275 to 150 to pass the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act(H.R. 1599). Congressman Ken Buck voted for the bill and released the following statement:

“You won’t have to worry about another extreme interest group coming after the corn that you grow,” said Congressman Buck. “This bill sets up a transparent, accurate, and voluntary labeling system as a national standard. Producers and consumers will be much better served under this system instead of a patchwork of disparate state laws.”

H.R. 1599 establishes a federal labeling standard for foods with genetically modified ingredients, giving sole authority to the Food and Drug Administration to require labeling on such foods if they are ever found to be materially different from foods produced without GM ingredients. It includes a provision to allow those who wish to label their products as GMO-free to do so through a USDA-accredited certification process.

Rep. Ken Buck (CO-04) is the Freshman Class President. He serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He serves on the OGR Subcommittees on Government Operations and the Interior and is a member of the Judiciary Subcommittees on Immigration and Border Security and Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations.
